Houston’s White Lightning: Travis Ellisor’s Widebody 2022 Explorer ST Build

Travis Ellisor, the driving force behind Houston Speed Freaks, has transformed his white 2022 Ford Explorer ST into a standout example of performance and style. By meticulously selecting and integrating a series of modifications, he has elevated the vehicle’s capabilities while maintaining its core integrity. We delve into the specifics of Travis’s build, exploring each component and its contribution to the overall performance and aesthetics of the Explorer ST.

Houston Speed Freaks

Houston’s Widebody White Lighting 2022 Ford Explorer ST

The 2022 Ford Explorer ST is engineered to deliver a balance of power, comfort, and versatility. Equipped with a twin-turbocharged 3.0L EcoBoost V6 engine producing 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque, it offers robust performance suitable for both daily driving and spirited excursions. The ST model also features sport-tuned suspension and all-wheel drive, providing enhanced handling and stability.

Performance Enhancements

Travis’s approach to enhancing the Explorer ST’s performance focused on optimizing airflow, fuel delivery, and exhaust efficiency.

CV Fabrication Intercooler

To improve the engine’s thermal efficiency, Travis installed a CVF Performance Intercooler. This intercooler is over twice the size of the stock unit and features a TIG-welded bar-and-plate design with fully cast end tanks, ensuring maximum airflow and durability. Independent testing has shown a reduction of over 85 degrees in charge air temperature, contributing to increased horsepower and improved engine longevity.

Thermal R&D Catback Exhaust

Enhancing the exhaust system, Travis opted for the Thermal R&D 3” Catback Exhaust. This system features 3-inch tubing that provides a deeper, throatier sound while incorporating True Helmholtz Technology to eliminate drone. The design ensures higher exhaust flow, contributing to improved performance without compromising comfort.

FENFabrication Downpipes

To further optimize exhaust flow, FENFabrication downpipes were installed. These components reduce backpressure, allowing the turbochargers to spool more efficiently, resulting in quicker throttle response and increased power output.

Fuel System Upgrades

Recognizing the benefits of ethanol fuel, Travis upgraded the fuel system to accommodate E85. This involved installing a Nostrum High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) and Nostrum Stage 2 injectors, ensuring adequate fuel delivery for the increased demands of E85, which has a higher octane rating and cooling properties beneficial for performance.

ZFG Racing E85 DMS Tune

With the hardware upgrades in place, a custom tune from ZFG Racing was implemented. This calibration optimizes the engine’s parameters to work seamlessly with the E85 fuel and performance modifications, enhancing power delivery, throttle response, and overall drivability.

Weight Reduction and Handling

To improve handling and reduce weight, Travis made strategic modifications to the vehicle’s structure and suspension.

Interior Modifications

The removal of the second and third-row seats resulted in significant weight reduction, lowering the vehicle’s center of gravity and enhancing handling dynamics. This modification also provides additional space, potentially for performance equipment or a more open interior layout.

H&R Lowering Springs

Installing H&R lowering springs further improved the Explorer ST’s handling by reducing body roll and enhancing cornering stability. The lowered stance also contributes to a more aggressive aesthetic.

Aesthetic Enhancements

Beyond performance, Travis focused on refining the vehicle’s visual appeal.

Waido Wide Body Kit

The addition of the Waido Wide Body Kit gives the Explorer ST a more commanding presence. This kit not only enhances the vehicle’s aesthetics but also allows for wider wheels and tires, improving traction and stability.

Custom Wheels and Tires

Complementing the wide body kit, custom S 71 wheels measuring 18 x 11 with a zero offset were selected. These wheels are wrapped in 325/45/18 Hoosier tires, providing substantial contact with the road for improved grip and performance.

Rear Wiper Delete

For a cleaner rear profile, the rear wiper was removed, streamlining the vehicle’s appearance.

Community Engagement and Influence

Travis’s modifications have garnered attention within the automotive community, particularly through platforms like TikTok, where he shares insights and showcases the vehicle’s capabilities. His involvement with Houston Speed Freaks has also facilitated collaborations and inspired other enthusiasts to pursue similar enhancements.
